Never has the adage "We need people who can go up and down" been more valid. Even before decreasing headcount and tightening budgets, marketing communications was heading in this direction. The model of having a stable of "thinkers" and a separate group of "doers" was already becoming antiquated. Top talent was becoming defined by their ability to think strategically and subsequently execute.
And now, midway through 2009, some organizations are finding themselves in the position to hire again. In many cases, this means rebuilding downsized teams- with one important caveat. Very few companies are simply backfilling open positions. More likely, marcom groups are reevaluating the needs of the team in conjunction with overall business objectives and creating new, more efficient and accountable roles.
As you encounter new opportunities be sure to keep this in mind. Does your resume reflect the ability to move "up and down"? Are you preparing for your interviews with accomplishments that demonstrate this ability? It will become more and more critical to prove this is not only an ability, but a desire...
