As we all know, building our network is key to a successful job search. We all use a few different methods to do this. One effective approach is to view current openings to find recruiters who may be able to help, even if the posting isn't a fit with your skill set. The reasoning is that they (recruiters) may have something else on their desk or in the future that is a match.
So here are my tips:
1. Research the individual recruiter. Make sure they are actually in a discipline or industry where they are able to help you. I've received resumes from CTO's, finance and even construction project managers- not a good use of anyone's time.
2. If you are not a fit for a posting and still want to connect, wait at least two weeks from the date of the posting. The first two weeks the recruiter has tunnel vision and your note gets put in a follow up folder (that rarely gets followed up on) or simply deleted.
Just a couple of tactics I am confident will improve your ROO (Return on Outreach).
