How to Be Memorable in Your Next Interview

“Be memorable.”  Age old advice when it comes to interviewing.  Of course, being memorable is easier said than done and open to interpretation.  So, does being memorable mean you include a picture of your cat on your resume?  Or talk about the time you were a paranormal investigator?  Not necessarily.  While these efforts may be memorable, here are a few other ideas to make a hiring manager or recruiter remember you…for the right reasons.

Know thyself.  And then be prepared to talk.  Your interviewer should not have to pull information out of you.  Your job is to know what you’ve accomplished (including tangible results) and to make it easy for your interviewer to learn about you and your background.

Be a student of the industry and read, read, read before your interview.  Know about the latest trends and happenings in advertising and marketing so you can draw on industry news where appropriate.  And nothing is worse than hearing the question, “Did you see that article in the Times…” and having to answer, “No, I didn’t.”

Personality plus.  This is a tough one, and should go without saying, but in an interview, you must be personable.  You need to establish a good rapport with your interviewer…even if they are not the most personable.

What’s your story?  Results are king when it comes to interviewing.  Employers want specific examples from past performance and everyone is looking for a great success story.  Have yours ready before you even walk into the room.
